Ibirapuera Park Marquise: Brasil Boards at the Reopening

On January 24, 2026, the iconic Marquise of Parque Ibirapuera, one of the symbols of Brazilian modern architecture designed by Oscar Niemeyer, was officially reopened after being closed for six years for extensive revitalization. Brasil Boards had the honor of being present at this historic moment, celebrating the return of a space that is a reference for culture, leisure, and sport in São Paulo.

A restored historical and cultural landmark

Inaugurated in 1954 along with Parque Ibirapuera, the Marquise covers about 27,000 square meters and connects important cultural facilities such as the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), the Oca, and the Afro Brazil Museum. Over the years, the structure suffered from cracks, leaks, and even a partial roof collapse in 2017, which led to its full closure in 2020 due to structural risks.

The revitalization, led by the concessionaire Urbia with resources from the São Paulo City Hall, involved an investment of nearly R$ 87 million to restore the floor, pillars, beams, ceiling, and lighting system, respecting the guidelines of heritage preservation agencies to maintain the original characteristics of the project.

Renewed space for community, sport, and culture

The reopening brought a new organization of the space, with designated areas for different uses. A 3,600-square-meter area was reserved for BMX, skate longboard, and rollerblading, honoring the Marquise’s tradition as the birthplace of these sports in the city. Additionally, a kids’ area of about 700 square meters was created for children with bicycles up to 16-inch wheels.

Brasil Boards, which follows and supports the skate longboard scene in São Paulo, celebrates the return of this space that has always been a meeting point and practice ground for the community. The location now features more powerful lighting, restored flooring, and a renewed roof, ensuring safety and comfort for visitors.

Shared use and coexistence rules

To ensure harmonious coexistence among diverse users, the City Hall established usage rules that include marking sports areas with tape on the floor, without fences, encouraging community oversight. Ball sports and the use of larger bicycles in the children’s area were restricted to preserve the structure and safety.

The concessionaire Urbia will also be able to hold cultural events and install a restaurant on site, expanding leisure and cultural options for park visitors.

Brasil Boards and skate longboard at the Marquise

Brasil Boards’ presence at the reopening reinforces our commitment to the development of skate longboard in quality public spaces. The Marquise of Ibirapuera is a landmark in the history of skateboarding in São Paulo, a stage for meetings, challenges, and the evolution of the sport since the 1970s.

With the revitalization, the Marquise returns as a democratic, safe, and inspiring space for riders of all ages and levels, strengthening the skate longboard culture and promoting integration between sport, art, and community.

The reopening of the Marquise of Parque Ibirapuera represents more than the restoration of an architectural work; it is the rebirth of a space that pulses with the energy of the city and its people. Brasil Boards is proud to be part of this story and invites everyone to rediscover the Marquise—whether to practice skate longboard, enjoy an exhibition, or simply relax in one of Brazil’s most emblematic parks.

See you at the Marquise, on the asphalt, in the tricks, and in the celebration of the culture that unites us!
